Sit Spot Buddy
08/11/2025

Pheidippides (Phidy, Dip, and so many others for short) has been my Sit Spot buddy for 13+ years. Early on, it was challenging to focus on any nature other than him. He chased the rabbits and chipmunks and scared the birds. Even the plants were challenged to grow in his presence.
As he grew, he learned where he was "allowed" to tread, and a bit of fencing reinforced those teachings to protect a few plants. He's even reasonably quiet, only barking to come inside - or at those pesky delivery drivers.
Our regular walks extend our sitting spot into a walking spot as we watch the natural cycles unfold along the bike path and creek nearby. Observing what his nose and ears uncover outside of my sensory range has added to my nature experience immensely.
For the last few years, the rabbits have learned that his slower pace is no longer a threat. He still gives them a nod, but they seem to have a working relationship. Robins, goldfinches, and chickadees come into the yard while he sits quietly with me. It makes for a more pleasant, meditative Sit Spot experience, but I also feel sad as I observe the inevitable cycles of nature unfolding at my feet.
As we move into this Autumn season, I don't know how much time we have left together, but I am grateful for this world that he has shared with me and try to carry on his spirit of joy and wonder at every new sight and smell.
